Music is an integral part of worship at the Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence.

We have a strong tradition of excellence in music.  Our program is based in Western classical music, and we also strive for diversity.  Our youth and other members of the congregation lend their varied talents in the summer and occasionally throughout the year, and we sing music from a variety of traditions during our services.

The adult choir (rehearsing on Thursday evenings) sings once or twice a month; its repertoire ranges from Renaissance motets to spirituals and African freedom songs.  New members are always welcome.  The Children’s Choir (rehearsing on Sundays between services) also sings at holiday services and often at our monthly multigenerational services.

When possible, our Director of Music works to find music and musicians especially appropriate to the theme or topic of a morning’s services.  Most services feature two interludes, sometimes provided by a guest musician in conjunction with the Director of Music (playing one of three instruments).  This past year has seen guest, member and youth performances by singers and brass players, violinists, wind players, guitarists, and a rock band.  We have recently restored the tradition of an annual “Musical Sunday” in which a larger work takes the place of the sermon.

Our Great Hall is home to a dual-manual organ and a grand piano, as well as frequently hosting a harpsichord. (More information about our instruments can be found on the Instruments at USNF page.)

Adult Choir:

The Adult Choir currently rehearses on most Thursday evenings in the Great Hall. Membership numbers between 12 and 18 singers; participation is open to all. The choir invariably sings at services associated with winter and spring holidays, and often at intermittent multigenerational services.
